About Kerb Wise

Kerb Wise is an independent guide to UK breakdown cover. We read every major provider’s own pages, score them all on one published rubric, and tell you plainly which cover is worth buying.

Why we started

Most people buy breakdown cover once a year, renew it without looking, and only find out how good it is on a bad day. That’s a poor mix for a product where a weak provider can turn an hour on the verge into most of a day.

The advice out there rarely helps. Brands get ranked by how well known they are, the same feature tables get copied from site to site, and the prices quoted seldom match what you see at checkout.

So we built the guide we wanted to read. It says what providers publish, points out what they leave out, and takes customer evidence seriously, even when it goes against a big name.

  • Ten provider reviews: AA, RAC, Green Flag, GEM Motoring Assist, Start Rescue, AutoAid, Britannia Rescue, ETA, Emergency Assist and Saga. Nine are scored. Saga isn’t, because its cover is provided by the RAC.
  • Three head-to-heads: AA vs RAC, AA vs Green Flag, and RAC vs Green Flag.
  • Five “best for” guides: families, electric cars, older cars, home start and cheap cover.
  • Practical guides, from what to do if you break down to how to make a claim.

How we work

A crawler reads each provider’s own pages every day and records the prices and features they publish. It doesn’t write or change anything.

An editor checks each review against the latest read, updates it by hand and scores it on one fixed rubric: affordability, cover quality, value for money, customer experience and an overall recommendation. Scores only change when the editor re-scores a provider.

Customer experience comes from Google reviews, always shown with the number of reviews behind the rating. Endorsements come from Defaqto and Which?, and the company behind a policy from Companies House.

Every step, and how each score adds up, is on how we review providers.

Who runs Kerb Wise

Kerb Wise is an independent UK publisher, edited by Richard Rowley. Reviews are researched and written in-house by people who read the evidence themselves. We don’t buy in outsourced content, and no provider, partner or affiliate network has a say in what we publish.

Spotted a mistake, missing a provider, or writing a story? Email [email protected]. A person reads every message, and the contact page says who handles what.

Our standards

  • We only publish prices we can find on a provider’s own pages.
  • We say when a feature is missing rather than skating over it.
  • We report poor customer evidence when the sample is big enough to mean something.
  • We’ll give a Fair or Poor score when the evidence points that way.
  • When we get something wrong, we fix it and add a dated note.

How we make money

  • Some links are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission. You pay the same price either way.
  • Some articles are paid partnerships. Each one is labelled “Partner content” and names the partner.
  • Neither affects a score. Scores come only from the published method.
  • Several providers we rate well don’t pay us anything.
  • Nobody can pay to be included, to move up a ranking or to get a better score.

What we’re not

  • Not a regulated adviser. Kerb Wise isn’t authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, and nothing here is regulated financial advice. We explain the options so you can choose for yourself.
  • Not a broker. We don’t sell, quote for or arrange breakdown cover. You buy on the provider’s own site.
  • Not owned by a provider. We share no ownership with any breakdown company we review.
  • Not an emergency service. If you’ve broken down, call the number on your policy, or 999 if anyone is in danger.

Check our work

You shouldn’t have to take our word for any of this. Every scored review shows:

  • the date we last checked the provider’s own pages
  • the Google rating, with the number of reviews behind it
  • links to the provider pages we quote, so you can read them yourself

If something looks wrong or out of date, email [email protected] with the page and what you saw. We’ll look into it within five working days.

See it in a review

The quickest way to judge us is to read one. Each review shows the score, the evidence behind it and where we drew the line.
